Rowley Bottom in 1907
The canal was abandoned at the turn of
the century and by 1907 the G.W.R. company had built a
railway branch line from Camerton to Limpley Stoke along the
route.
Lock 16 disappeared under the railway embankment but,
surprisingly, most of the rest of the canal structures were
not affected by the railway.
Caisson House, the canal engineer's residence was probably
built by the 1850s, soon after the pumping engine was
removed to Dunkerton.
